House of Sky and Breath, the highly anticipated second book in Sarah J. Maas’sCrescent City series, raises Bryce Quinlan and her group to an otherworldly crescendo as they face down monstrous foes amidst a vibrant feast-for-the-senses world you simply won’t be able to forget. House of Earth and Blood left off on an exploding cliffhanger, this second installment picks right back up with more relationship hang-ups, power struggles, and court threats that threaten the lives around them.
It is Bryce’s story House of Sky and Breath as she deals with the fallout of one hell of a mess in which her heart grows heavier and carries more. With her loved ones gone and nowhere else to turn, she follows the last path open to her—and hopes for redemption. Hunt Athalar, fallen god and Jaein warrior: is saying becomes the assassin Knight—along with Bryce he must resist his promise to protect her, but Hunt also has everything much larger demons of his own.
With tensions running high in the city, and secrets kept hidden at every turn as courtesans of House Severin its Saiyan must be: dancing just a half step ahead of death behind betrayal is only despicable. The final reckoning has come. Power blocks feedthe pieces into play and Machiavelli might find the current moves a touch out of his depth as Bryce, Hunt, their friends & allies are thrown headlong into a deadly world of secrets, betrayal, and political machinations in which even loyalties may be tested to destruction[minisote). This novel is beautifully written and Maas seamlessly works on themes of friendship, love, and sacrifice as well as those being played out under pressure.
New characters are dropped right into this expanding narrative and in doing so only deepen the already existing dynamics. These include leaders from various Houses who have their plans and ambitions. The expanded cast makes the story richer and creates layered interactions that add a lot to this invisible world.
Indeed, one of the central arcs in Bryce’s storyline is her experiment with these new powers. With the discovery of her capabilities and just what they mean, she is given choices that are potentially save her city or destroy it. Power versus responsibility is also a recurring motif, with Bryce coming to understand that real power comes from being vulnerable and expressing connection towards others.
The story unfolds and Bryce and Hunt must come to terms with their history… what they have done, who messed over whom…and then each, individually wrestles with what might be the future. The two bond, love filled with fire and fear balanced between fights against one another as they demand answers, yet realizing too that their only hopes of fending off the darkness lie in unity.
The story House of Sky and Breath is all hands on deck and tidal wave strength motion, so when the word count drops down it’s a heavy cold wet blanket of emotionally charged revelations bound to change the way they are living. Maas ratchets up the tension as a number of confrontations serve to try both the character’s will and their loyalty. The resolution leads the way to up-and-coming conflicts in a further book if there are any (all of us are hoping for more!
