THE SILENT PATIENT: In this fast-paced and unforgettable psychological thriller, one woman must confront her moral fears after succumbing to an all-consuming obsession with a novel by Alex Michaelidesat the center of her trauma while she struggles in life. — another.) The story follows Alicia Berenson, a famous painter who shoots her husband Gabriel five times in the face but never says another word. Narrated by forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber who is drawn to the case of Alicia. Intent on aiding her, he accepts a profession at the Grove to find out why she has been rendered speechless. The Silent Patient in the deeper Theo digs into Alicia’s upbringing without a family, her days of living on the streets with artists and drug addicts with their freedom from restraint or convention…normally he would relish something like this — his interest is aroused: ‘So you just forgot everything and walked out into traffic wearing whatever came to hand?’—but now it fascinates him too much as a way in.
We get to know Alicia from her journal, in which she shares strong emotions and a world that feels like it is imploding (and maybe actually doing so). These journal entries demonstrate Alicia’s fight with her mental health, a rocky relationship with her husband and everyone else in the world, especially her family & friends.
Rescued from the scene of a fire, in which her mother perished, she was found bloodied and standing over Gabriel’s barely alive body at their home; Theo promises to help Alicia return to life together he would split the whole night with 6 very disturbed patients all nurses fear. He not only goes on a hunt for answers but also an inner quest as he tries to come to terms with his demons and reasons. The tension mounts of course as the lines become ever fuzzier between therapist and patient, leading to unexpected twists aplenty.
Michaelides does a fantastic job creating that same kind of feel in his thriller, giving us plenty of red herrings and surprises to keep things interesting. The most unnerving truths come to light during the climax, which turns perceptions of both Theo and readers on their heads, leaving everyone waiting with bated breath for how Floyd will tie up all of these spidery threads.
