Picking up where the first book, Gild, left off “Glint” dives into Auren’s awakening as she comes to terms with who and what should be believed.
Auren herself is just getting used to her life outside of the king’s palaceafter having broken free from his gilded cage, which sets things into motion. She would then escape the physical and mental captivity of her history, stepping out on her own as begins in search for freedom from a life she so long had been made to feel afraid of. Yet, freedom presents its problems as they learn the harsh life that has been lived in a world full of betrayal and hurt.
As Auren tries to find her way in this new life, perhaps the most interesting thing becomes all of these complex characters that also cross paths with her — allies and foes both keep their reasons. The connections she makes are complicated and full of tension, mirroring how trust and loyalty twist as power changes hands. Most notable in this coming-of-age plot is Auren’s relationship with the young, enigmatic king and how her bond with him becomes ever more crucially tied up with so many of those emotional layers.
Interwoven within “Glint,” we see an in-depth examination of existential crisis, self-actualization, and intrinsic power! While Auren’s struggles are different than many of ours, they still feel familiar as she fights not only outside enemies but also her doubts and insecurities. The story mainly revolves around her development showing how she turned from an object of desire to a strong independent person who understands the power that lies within itself.
A hunt for the assassin, a time-siphon, nameless (.), tells Auren her parents’ fate; but she practices her powers in secret as someone who wants them dead follows. But with higher stakes, come dark forcesand she will have to make the ultimate choice which not only affects herself but everyone around her. Kennedy does an excellent job increasing the pressure, combining high-action scenes with internal moments that help to ground Auren’s emotional journey and achieve sympathy from the reader.
There’s some lovely writing in Glint that is both evocative and engaging, full of crisp descriptions painting the world around us. What makes it compelling is how the author includes elements of fantasyand romance together to create a complete narrative arc that holds the reader’s attention. This is already a great start and as Auren overcomes her fears to harness her power, the novella becomes an interesting voyage into this little girl’s self-discovery.
The only it continues is more insidious and fits the personal journey of self-discovery Auren needed. She becomes a woman in her own right away from the shadow of any patriarch. This all ultimately culminates in one huge action-packed finale that leaves everything well-set up for the events yet to be recounted in future The Divinity Saga stories.
