Plot Summary
The Story centers around Alex, when she was a teen, till being accused of killing her family. She endured public vilification and the ‘dent’ in reputation. Ten years later, Alex is an investigator for a law firm. But when the case involves Laura McAllister, a now missing girlfriend of Matthew Claymore, her day-to-day quickly turns personal for Rox!Using as its backdrop an elite college whose sexual assault cover-up was about to go public, the show centered around Laura, a journalist. Still on Isabella’s trail, Alex finally get learns the secrets she has buried and is forced to deal with changes from her previous life, while confronting a crime so unblemished by any society.
My Thoughts The book contains a lot of depth in its layers, namely the themes it tries to touch upon such as justice, media portrayal, identity crises and the ugly side of privilege. The evolution of Alex from victim to detective illustrates her pursuit of the truth and self-empowerment. Her story, though extreme, serves as a reminder of how difficult it can be to move through a world in which appearances so frequently matter more than reality — and particularly when there are powerful forces at play.

Why “Those Empty Eyes” Is Worth The Read
Compelling and Fast-Paced Storytelling:You will be caught into the premise from the get-go. Donlea does this so well, creating twists and turns that keep you guessing: both in the mystery of what happened to Laura as well as the conspiracy — or not — around Alex and her family being murdered.
The leads: the main protagonist, Alex, is a well-rounded and likable person. The journey of how this traumatized teen becomes an unyielding detective grasps the depth of honesty from the readers for her quest. Other characters, like the city-old-corruption figures Alex runs into, also flesh out the story’s take on moral grayness.
An Exploration of the Media:Donlea eloquently explores the ways in which media can shape and warp, on the lives of those that get caught up in its gaze. And Alex himself, bearing the nom de plume “Empty Eyes”, can testify to how public opinion can be contorted; so the novel is ironically poignant in its timely comment on media-led stories.
Twists and Turns:The many plot twists and reveals in this novel make sure there is never a dull moment for the reader. I was convinced I knew where this story was going at a certain point but then Donlea threw me for a loop, and he kept the mystery alive until the final pages.
Justice vs Corruption: By plunging into the corrupt bowels of a university whistleblower scandal, the prologue opens up on how privilege and power prevent justice. It is an inspiring (and chilling) representation of endurance in the face of injustice for Alex.
